Live in Spain while working remotely for your foreign employer or clients
Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa is one of the most flexible ways for non-EU citizens to live in Spain while continuing their international career. It allows you to work remotely for a foreign company, or as a freelancer with foreign clients, from anywhere in the country.
At NomadTaxSpain, we specialise in guiding remote workers and their families through the entire process, combining expert immigration advice with tax planning tailored to your move to Spain, including relocations to Mallorca.
What is the Digital Nomad Visa?
The Digital Nomad Visa (and its corresponding residence permit) is designed for non-EU nationals who work entirely online for companies or clients located outside Spain.
You can apply either:
- From your home country, obtaining a 12-month visa; or
- From within Spain, obtaining a three-year residence permit directly.
Both options allow you to live in Spain while working remotely using exclusively digital means.
Who Can Apply?
You may qualify if you meet the following general conditions:
- Remote employment or freelancing
- You must have a minimum three-month professional relationship with your foreign employer or foreign clients.
- The foreign company must have at least one year of continuous activity.
- Freelancers may work for Spanish clients, provided this represents no more than 20% of their total activity.
- Professional qualifications
A university degree, specialised training, or relevant professional experience of at least three years.
- Economic means
Proof of sufficient stable income to support yourself (and your family, if applicable).
- No criminal record
A clean criminal record from the countries where you have lived in recent years.
- Health insurance
Private health insurance valid in Spain, offering full medical coverage.
Family members (spouse or partner and dependent children) may be included in the application.
Financial Requirements: Minimum Economic Means
The minimum income changes with Spain's Salario Minimo Interprofesional (SMI). For 2026, the SMI is EUR 1,221 per month:
- Main applicant: 200% of the SMI – EUR 2,442 per month.
- First family member: an additional 75% – approximately EUR 916 per month.
- Each additional family member: an additional 25% – approximately EUR 305 per month.
Amounts are cumulative: an applicant moving with a spouse or partner needs approximately EUR 3,358 per month. Confirm the current SMI before filing. Evidence may include contracts, payslips or employer certificates.
How the Application Works
Apply at a Spanish Consulate
This route is ideal if you are outside Spain. Once approved, you receive a one-year visa, which can be converted into a residence card after arrival.
Apply from inside Spain
If you are legally in Spain (tourist status included), you may apply online for the three-year residence permit. This is often the preferred route for clients already settled in Mallorca.
Our team handles the entire procedure on your behalf.
Required Documentation
Although requirements may vary depending on your profile, they typically include:
- Passport (complete copy).
- Remote work contract or freelancer agreements.
- Proof of company activity abroad (for example, a business registry certificate).
- Evidence of income.
- Criminal records certificate.
- Health insurance.
- Evidence of Social Security coverage or registration, depending on your profile.
- Form 790-038 (government fee).
- Residence application form (MI-T for the applicant, MI-F for family members).
Some documents may need translation or apostille/legalisation.
Processing Time
Applications submitted under the Start-Up Law benefit from fast-track processing, with a legal maximum of 20 working days. If the administration does not respond in time, the application is considered approved by positive silence.
Tax Advantages (Beckham Law)
Digital Nomad Visa holders may qualify for Spain’s special tax regime for inbound workers, commonly known as the Beckham Regime. This regime offers significant tax advantages, including a flat tax rate on Spanish-sourced income.
Eligibility is not automatic. Our tax team can assess your position and handle the entire process.

Can my spouse or partner work legally in Spain under this visa?
Yes. Family members with the corresponding residence authorisation may work as employees or self-employed professionals from day one, without a separate permit.
Can I travel within the Schengen Area with the Digital Nomad Visa?
Yes. It allows short trips to other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, but not residence or work rights there.
How long does the application process take?
Residence applications filed online with the UGE from Spain have a 20-working-day legal maximum. Without an express decision in that period, positive administrative silence applies.
What happens if I apply from inside Spain vs. my home country?
A Spanish Consulate grants a visa for up to one year. Applicants legally in Spain may apply directly for a residence permit for up to three years.
