Essential registration for all residents in Spain. We handle the entire process with your local Town Hall so you obtain your census certificate quickly and correctly.

What is Census Registration (Empadronamiento) in Spain?

When you move to Spain, one of the first mandatory administrative steps is to register with the local population registry, known as the padrón municipal or Empadronamiento. This register is managed by each Town Hall and confirms your address, the date of registration and, where applicable, who you live with.

Whether you are an EU citizen, a non-EU national, a digital nomad, a student or a family relocating, census registration is essential for many immigration, tax and day-to-day procedures in Spain.

Why is Census Registration so important?

The census certificate issued by your Town Hall is required in a wide range of procedures. Without it, many applications cannot move forward, even if you meet all other requirements.

  • Applying for residence permits and renewals.
  • Registering for public healthcare.
  • Enrolling children in schools.
  • Obtaining or updating your foreigner number and records.
  • Proving length of residence for future nationality applications.
  • Accessing local services and benefits.
  • Demonstrating address and cohabitation for family reunification.
  • Supporting tax residency and other administrative filings in Spain.

Proper registration gives you an official proof of address that Spanish authorities recognise in almost every procedure.

Who needs to register on the padrón?

You should complete census registration if you live in Spain more than 183 days per year or if you have moved to Spain with the intention of staying long-term. In practice, even shorter stays often require it, for example for school or healthcare access.

  • People who have moved to Spain for work or relocation.
  • Students and trainees staying for medium or long terms.
  • Families renting or owning a home in Spain.
  • Applicants for immigration procedures (EU citizens and non-EU nationals).
  • Individuals sharing accommodation and needing proof of address and cohabitation.

Both owners and tenants must register, and in shared homes the process may require documentation or authorisation from the landlord or other registered residents.

Documents required for Empadronamiento

Each municipality has its own rules, but most Town Halls ask for a similar set of documents. We adapt the list to your specific location and situation.

  • Passport or national identity card.
  • Foreigner ID number if you already have one.
  • Rental contract, property deed or written authorisation from the owner if you are not on the contract.
  • Recent utility bill for the property.
  • Specific authorisation form from the owner or main resident, where required.
  • For families: birth certificates, family book or guardianship documentation.

If any document is missing, expired or not correctly prepared, the Town Hall may reject the application and force you to rebook and repeat the process. Our goal is to avoid that from the start.
