Importing and registering your foreign vehicle in Spain
If you relocate to Spain and bring your car with you, you cannot drive indefinitely with foreign plates. You must complete the vehicle import and registration process to obtain Spanish licence plates (matrícula española) and fully legalise the vehicle in Spain. Driving with foreign plates is only allowed for a limited period, and failing to register correctly can result in fines, insurance complications and problems passing inspections.
At NomadTaxSpain, we coordinate the entire process — from the moment the vehicle arrives in Spain to the issuance of your Spanish plates. We deal with taxes, ITV appointments, customs and DGT paperwork so you avoid stress and costly mistakes.
When you must register your vehicle in Spain
You are usually required to register your non-Spanish vehicle if any of the following applies:
- You become a resident in Spain.
- You bring a foreign vehicle that you intend to use regularly in Spain.
- You permanently import a vehicle from another country (EU or non-EU).
- You purchase a vehicle that has not yet been registered in Spain.
Authorities may impose sanctions if they consider that a vehicle with foreign plates is being used habitually in Spain without proper registration, especially once you are resident.
Key steps in the Spanish vehicle registration process
Vehicle registration in Spain can be complex, involving several authorities: Customs, the Tax Agency, ITV stations and the Provincial Traffic Office (DGT). We coordinate the entire procedure for you.
1. Document review and initial assessment
We start by analysing your specific case to choose the correct legal and tax route from the beginning:
- Vehicle origin (EU, UK or non-EU).
- Age, mileage and technical specifications.
- Whether homologation or technical adaptations are required.
- Applicable taxes and possible exemptions or reliefs.
- Your residency status and relocation conditions.
This initial assessment allows us to estimate costs, timing and potential risks in advance.
2. Tax clearance and import taxes
Depending on the country of origin and your personal situation, several taxes and duties may apply. We identify what applies to you and handle all filings.
- Registration Tax (Impuesto de Matriculación) based on CO₂ emissions and vehicle value.
- Local Road Tax (Impuesto de Circulación / IVTM) paid annually to your Town Hall.
- Customs documentation for non-EU vehicles.
- Import duties and VAT for certain imports.
We also examine whether you qualify for tax relief (for example, change of residence exemptions when you relocate to Spain with a vehicle you already owned abroad) and manage the application where applicable.
3. Technical inspection (ITV)
Before the vehicle can be registered, it must pass the Spanish technical inspection (ITV). We support you in:
- Booking the ITV appointment.
- Preparing and checking the required documentation.
- Managing homologation issues or required adaptations (lights, emissions, modifications).
- Dealing with special cases such as UK vehicles, modified vehicles or classic cars.
Once the vehicle passes the inspection, the ITV station issues the Ficha Técnica Española, which is mandatory for final registration.
4. DGT registration and Spanish licence plates
After taxes and ITV are completed, we prepare and submit the full registration file to the DGT:
- Official registration form.
- Proof of all relevant tax payments.
- ITV certificate and technical documentation.
- Identity and residency documents for the owner (passport, NIE, padrón).
- Insurance information where required by the Traffic Authority.
Once approved, the DGT issues the permiso de circulación and authorisation to obtain your Spanish licence plates, which can usually be made the same day at an authorised workshop.
Typical documents needed for vehicle registration
Although each case is different, you should expect to provide at least:
- Passport or EU national identity card.
- NIE and proof of residency in Spain.
- Purchase invoice, previous registration certificate or other proof of ownership.
- Foreign registration certificate and technical documents for the vehicle.
- Customs paperwork for non-EU vehicles.
- Proof of address in Spain (for local taxes).
- Receipts for tax payments (Registration Tax, IVTM).
- ITV documentation and Spanish technical card.
We review every document carefully and let you know what needs to be obtained, translated or legalised so the file is complete from the start.
